Preparation of DPR for Restoration and Refurbishment of Gokhale Hall, Chennai for Proposed Museum of Freedom Movement
The YMIA building also known as Gokhale Hall, built in 1915 is a Grade 1 heritage structure located on Armenian Street in George Town, Chennai. In the past, the hall was an important venue in the freedom struggle of India, where the Indian Home Rule League (towards Swarajya) was formed by Dr Annie Besant in 1916. The project involves restoration and refurbishment of Gokhale hall in chennai for the proposed Museum of Freedom Movement for National Council of Science Museums (NCSM), Ministry of Culture, Government of India. The proposal is consultancy service for preparation of Detailed project report involving condition assesment, structural consolidation and Adaptive reuse as a museum.
Currently the heritage structure is in a precarious state and in the verge of collapse. A detailed study on structural and material condition assessment was involved which determined the degree of damage. The most challenging is the intervention stratergy with dismantling through controlled demolition, Structural rehabilitation and Adaptive reuse as a Museum.
